Sean Penn has ‘nothin’ to hide’ about El Chapo interview

Sean Penn thinks he’s no dead man walking.

The actor said Monday he has “nothin’ to hide” after his bombshell interview with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

His statement comes after Mexican media published photographs appearing to indicate government officials had him and actress Kate Del Castillo under surveillance ahead of their October visit with the kingpin.

Guzman was apprehended Friday, six months after he escaped Mexico’s most secure prison, creating a huge embarrassment for President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The actors’ meeting with Guzman for an article published in Rolling Stone reportedly led authorities to the fugitive.

Penn’s latest comment came as video emerged of the firefight between Mexican Marines and cartel members that culminated with Guzman’s capture.

Meanwhile, the Mexican government had begun the long process of extraditing Guzman to the U.S. to face trial.

The handoff will probably take “one year or longer,” the head of Mexico’s extradition office, Manuel Merino, told Radio Formula on Monday.

He said legal challenges had made the extradition process last as long as six years in one case.

It’s unclear where Guzman would be brought to justice, once he arrives in the U.S.

He has two separate arrest warrants filed against him in California and Texas.

Those warrants, which include charges of organized crime, embezzlement, association with murder are in addition to indictments in Illinois, New York, Florida and New Hampshire.

Mexico’s willingness to extradite Guzman is a sharp turnaround from the last time he was captured in 2014, when then-Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam said the extradition would happen only after he finished his sentence in Mexico in “300 or 400 years.”

On Sunday, agents formally notified Guzman that he was wanted in the United States.

A federal official told AFP that the attorney general’s office wants to talk with Sean Penn (l.) and Kate del Castillo (r.) about their secretive meeting with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman (c.) in October.

In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office said Mexican agents assigned to the international police agency Interpol served two arrest warrants to the drug lord, who is being held at the Altiplano prison following his capture by Mexican marines on Friday.

Guzman’s defense has three days to present arguments against extradition and 20 days to present supporting evidence, beyond the plethora of other appeals they have already started filing.

Guzman’s attorney Juan Pablo Badillo has said the defense has already filed six motions to challenge extradition requests.

He argued his client shouldn’t be extradited to the U.S. because “our country must respect national sovereignty, the sovereignty of its institutions to impart justice.”

Guzman’s powerful Sinaloa cartel smuggles multi-ton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the U.S.
