The nearly two month search for the missing mother-in-law of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine ended in tragedy Wednesday after authorities in Southern California found the 75-year-old grandmother dead.

Sally Estabrook disappeared from a campground south of Julian in San Diego County on Oct. 4. Her husband went to shower and found Sally, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, missing when he returned, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said.

The 53-year-old Mustaine, a legendary rocker who spent time playing with Metallica before helming Megadeth, stood with his wife, Pam, and pleaded with the public for help in the search for the missing woman, who was unable to speak but responded to the pet name Nana.

Hundreds of searchers scoured a six-mile area around the Pinezanita RV Park & Campgrounds, a rural area northeast of San Diego.

Someone called police after finding a body Wednesday afternoon around 3:20 p.m., just half a mile from where Estabrook was last seen. The clothing found on the partially skeletal remains matched that of Estabrook, and authorities confirmed on Thanksgiving the body belonged to the missing grandmother.

Authorities said the remains were found in dense brush just off a roadway, and no foul play is suspected.

Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza offered condolences on social media to the family and Mustaine thanked everyone for their support in a Facebook post after learning of the find. His daughter, Electra Mustaine, mourned her grandmother in a moving Instagram beside a picture of Estabrook celebrating her birthday.

Nana, you are beautiful, gracious, loving, meek, humble, & ever so selfless,” Electra wrote. “You are an angel now, but this is not new… You always have been. I’m so thankful for you.”
