Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia, but it can be treated with antibiotics.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by a bacteria found naturally in the environment, usually in water.

The bacteria grows best in warm water like the kind found in decorative fountains, hot tubs, hot water tanks and cooling towers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

People contract the disease when they breathe in a mist or vapor containing the bacteria but do not catch it from another infected person.

Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches and headaches that begin two to 14 days after exposure.

Most cases of Legionnaires’ disease can be treated successfully with antibiotics. Healthy people usually get better, but hospitalization is often required.
